With the multi-generational supergroup ACS, sisterhood isn’t just powerful, it’s downright explosive.
A spectacular fusion of three celebrated bandleaders who each bring daunting technique and a questing spirit of improvisation to the collective ensemble, ACS emerged out of Terri Lyne Carrington’s GRAMMY Award-winning 2011 album The Mosaic Project. A pianist of bracing intelligence and unerring improvisational instincts, Gerry Allen is the band’s veteran seeker. Over her expansive career, she has released eighteen albums as a leader and collaborated with a pantheon of masters including Ornette Coleman, Charles Lloyd, Wayne Shorter, and Charlie Haden. Carrington was already an elite accompanist when she released her 1989 debut Real Life Story with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Greg Osby, and Dianne Reeves. A musical prodigy championed as a youth by legendary drumming figures Buddy Rich and Jack DeJohnette, she had lengthy tenures with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock.
Esperanza Spalding was already jazz’s brightest young star before winning an unprecedented Best New Artist GRAMMY Award in 2011, and remains the most celebrated ambassador in jazz, a spellbinding talent who has brought her sleek and soulful sound to a vast international audience. Elegant, experimental, and unquestionably bold, ACS provides this brilliant triumvirate with a vivid forum for further explorations.
ACS Trio Gerry Allen Terri Lyne Carrington and Esperanza Spalding performs on Friday, Apr 14 and Saturday, April 15 at Scullers Jazz Club. Showtimes each night ate 8 and 10 PM.
