An Exploration of Social Justice Through Live Painting

Social justice art is often described as a wide range of visual and performance art expression that highlights the struggles, cultures and issues affecting a particular individual, group or collective thought. This art is often edgy, bold and thought provoking to raise awareness and create a social consciousness that will hopefully, inspire social change.

While many art lovers visit museums/galleries or lectures to admire this art, they may often wonder what inspired this artist to create the work but lack the opportunity to ask. Rarely are there chances to dialogue with an artist about their creative process and how; many of their inspiring works came to be. Moreover, audiences do not typically find themselves watching the artist create!

With “Need I Paint More? An Exploration of Social Justice Through Live Painting” we hope to fill that void of the connection with audiences and artists. During this event, audience members will have the opportunity to watch artists create live paintings based on a social justice prompt that communities of color across Greater Boston face. Audience members are given five index cards, by which they can write one question they would like to ask each artist, then place in a decorated shoebox beside each painting. After the paintings are complete, a panel discussion will begin where selected questions will be pulled from the shoebox and asked to the artists.
