Dr. Shamard Charles serves as senior health journalist for NBC News. He received his medical degree from Brown University and is a global press fellow for the United Nations. Breaking barriers, he is the first African American male to hold this post in the network’s nearly 100 year history. Since joining the network in 2017 Dr. Charles has led NBC’s health and medical coverage including groundbreaking reporting during Hurricane Maria. In addition, he’s made numerous humanitarian trips to Santiago, Dominican Republic and has been featured on NPR for his reporting on the dearth of black men in medicine.
