Diwali: The Festival of Lights

Listen to this article

Celebrate Diwali at the MFA, an ancient festival of lights observed around the world by many cultures and religions. On Diwali, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains—some of the world’s oldest religions—light a diya with family and friends, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

Enjoy an evening of storytelling and dance, tours and talks, including a session about Diwali, its origins, and how it’s commemorated. Tour the galleries exploring highlights from the MFA’s collection of South Asian art, watch festive performances of Odissi classical dance and Sambalpuri folk dance presented in partnership with the Odisha Society of the Americas, and make art with artist and educator, Sunanda Sahay, while she demonstrates Madhubani, or Mithila, painting.

Diwali: The Festival of Lights takes place at the Museum of Fine Arts on Nov. 2, 2016. Free admission begins at 4 pm. All events are free.
