Are you able to love someone who changes every day? Not just a change in personality or in that person’s likes and dislikes; we’re talking about a change into a completely different person. You go to bed with a beautiful young man and wake up next to an elderly grandmother.

 

Could you stand it? Would your love be strong enough?

 

That is the fascinating premise of The Beauty Inside, the debut film from director Baik, one of Korea’s leading visual artists and a leading force in the commercial field best known for the unique stories and sophisticated eye-catching visuals he brings to his projects.

 

The film tells the story of a talented furniture designer named Woo-jin who, since the morning of his 18th birthday, changes every day into a new person — man, a woman, a child, an old man … and even a foreigner.

 

One day, when he visits his regular furniture store, Woo-jin finds E-soo and falls for her at the very first sight. The attraction is mutual, and strong enough for Woo-jin to contemplate letting his new love in on his surprising secret.

 

What happens next is about as charming as a story can be without ever becoming too sickeningly sweet or unbelievable.

#1. ‘Woo-jin is played by 123 actors.

The number of the actors who played Woo-jin in The Beauty Inside is 123 including the 21 actors who played the Woo-jins at the important moments of the plot. The filmmakers met over 400 actors and 123 selected from the auditions had the chance to play Woo-jin.

 

#2. Korea’s top talent agents are all in the film.

21 actors who played Woo-jin at the crucial moments of the story; the funny thing is we can also meet their agents in the film, too. Most of them appeared in the film as the part of the montages of diverse Woo-jins and it eventually became the inevitable condition in casting an actor. And most of the production staff played Woo-jin in the montage scenes.

 

#3. ‘E-soo’ could have been ‘Woo-jin’.

The Beauty Inside is based on the social film of the same title produced by Intel and Toshiba. The filmmakers tried really hard to get the actress who played E-soo’s character in the original as one of the Woo-jins. But it never worked out in the end as the actress’ schedule didn’t fit in the shooting schedule.

 

#4. Actress HAN Hyo-joo? She’s also writer HAN.

With her unusual attachment to The Beauty Inside, HAN Hyo-joo gave a lot of thoughts and efforts on her character, E-soo. Especially for the scene with Woo-jin at the end, she suggested to the director the lines that she would like to say to Woo-jin as E-soo and the director accepted her emotions and sensitivities and completed the dialogue that could resonate in the heart of the audiences for a long time.
